What your skin says about your health

Updated: Nov 2, 2021

Your skin plays an important role in your health. It is the largest organ of the body which links it to the body's immune system.

Because the skin is the largest organ on the body, it signals us with warning signs if the body's immune system has been compromised in any way. The skin for example, will raise a red flag through its colour, texture and appearance.

Here are some symptoms to look out for:

Itchy Skin

Itchy skin is the most common factor that signals a compromised immune system. Dry skin is a likely cause of itchy skin but itchiness can also reflect other internal issues. Dry skin and itchiness is normally associated with liver disease, allergies and asthma.

Facial Hair in Women

The appearance of male like facial hair in females along with breakouts that seem untreatable can be a sign of Polycystic Ovary Syndrome (PCOS).

Brittle Nails and Dull Skin

Brittle hair, nails and ashy dull skin may be a sign of thyroid problems.

Yellowish Bumps

Untreated high levels of cholesterol will show up as yellowish bumps underneath the skin.

If you have experienced any of the above mentioned symptoms, know that your skin barrier has been compromised. It is recommended that you seek professional advice so that the skin's barrier can be restored.

It's important to take note of what the skin tries to communicate with us. A healthy skin starts from within.
